Broodmare Partnership

JHB Broodmare Partnership produces $1.7 million Snitzel colt at Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale

We set up the JHB Broodmare Partnership to target elite-level broodmares with which to breed into the top end of the yearling market. In a short time, the partnership has already produced a sale-topping yearling, with the I Am Invincible x Suspicieuse colt achieving a price of $1,900,000 at Magic Millions in 2022.

It was great to see this backed up again just three years later with the Snitzel x Fashion Faux Pas colt today selling for $1,700,000 to Coolmore Stud.

Fashion Faux Pas was secured for our partners from the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sales for US$310,000, as American mares are a cornerstone of our strategy. There have been numerous top-class horses produced in Australia out of American mares such as Exceed and Excel, Switzerland, Russian Revolution and Wild Ruler, and we feel that they represent great value for our partners.

Congratulations to our Broodmare partners Belinda Bateman, Doyle's Breeding and Racing, Phil & Glenda Mehrten and Rob Love. Also a huge thanks to the Newgate team, who have raised both of these $1.7m+ colts superbly and presented both in impeccable order for their sales.

JHB Broodmare Partnership in action stateside

The Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Switzerland (out of Arrowfield's Fasig Tipton purchase Ms Bad Behavior) provided further proof, if any were needed, of the exceptional prowess of American mares in the Australian racing and breeding industry.

This is an angle we have been pursuing strongly in recent years, and we were delighted to secure a pair of speedy American mares for our Broodmare Partnership this week at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

Lot 505, Betsy Blue (pictured above) was secured for US$375,000 from Ballysax Bloodstock. She was a very fast sprinter on the competitive New York circuit, where she was a triple stakes winner in fast times, and overall a 10-time winner. She is in foal to Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist, who is one of the hottest young stallions in America, with his fee for 2025 recently announced at US$175,000 (A$262,000).

Our second purchase was lot 1063, Let's Be Clear, for US$340,000 from Patricia Clark. This strong daughter of top stallion Munnings was a six-time winning sprinter and stakes placed as an early 2YO at Saratoga. She's a half-sister to a pair of stakes winners, including Group 1 performer Someday Soon.

JHB Broodmare Partnership sells big in Saratoga

Constitution x Emro filly at Atlas Farm, Kentucky, USA

It was in 2022 that we identified a mare in Kentucky at the Fasig-Tipton November Breeding Stock Sale who, as a 2YO stakes winner, would be an ideal candidate for our Elite Broodmare Partnership. Named Emro, she was also offered in foal to Constitution, who was just beginning to emerge as a very promising stallion in America. We were thrilled to secure Emro for US$425,000 on behalf of the partnership.

Fast forward to the current day, and it was time for the resultant yearling that Emro was carrying at the time was offered today in the Fasig Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale through the Bedouin Bloodstock draft. After parading in great style through the inspection period she was the subject of great attention from the buyers, and was eventually sold for US$500,000 to Lael Stables, more than covering the initial purchase price of her dam.

Thanks have to go to Neal Clark and Conor Doyle, who did a great job bother raising the filly at Atlas Farm and at the sales under their Bedouin Bloodstock banner.

Emro is now very well travelled herself. Having foaled down the Constitution filly, she was subsequently sent to the UK and bred to Juddmonte’s outstanding stallion Frankel. She is now resident at Newgate Farm here in Australia and due to foal in the next fortnight, ahead of a date with multiple Champion sire Snitzel in 2024.

Congratulations to our Broodmare Partnership clients Belinda Bateman, the Doyle family, Rob Love and Phil & Glenda Mehrten.

JHB Elite Broodmare Partnership yearling tops Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale

The I Am Invincible x Suspicieuse colt, pictured as a foal with his dam.

The very first yearling to sell for our Broodmare Partnership set the Magic Millions sale ring alight this afternoon at the Gold Coast Yearling Sale, selling for $1,900,000 to Tom Magnier of Coolmore Australia.

His dam, Suspicieuse, was secured privately by JHB carrying this colt, as a commercial breeding prospect for a group of our owners who have come together to purchase her. We identified her as a highly-desirable breeding prospect, given that her first foal is Group 3 Breeders’ Plate winner Dubious (by Not a Single Doubt), and eventually as a bullseye mare to visit King’s Legacy, as he is a three-quarter brother to Not a Single Doubt

This colt has been an absolute standout from day one through all of our regular inspections of our clients’ stock, and we are delighted for our owners that the market was in agreement, with incredibly strong competition to secure him. In addition to an incredible physique, he is blessed with the most unflappable temperament, and he is a tremendously exciting racing and, hopefully, stallion prospect.

Suspicieuse has a lovely Pariah filly on the ground, and is resident at Newgate Farm. Congratulations to our owners, Belinda Bateman, Rob Love, Phil & Glenda Mehrten and Fergus Doyle, and wishing Coolmore the very best of luck with this outstanding colt. Finally, many thanks to all of the team at Newgate Farm, who have done a tremendous job in raising him.
