Already a 2YO stakes winner, Capitalist colt Cannonball demonstrated his sprinting prowess on the weekend, with a dominant display of sustained speed to take out the Group 3 Maurice McCarten Stakes against some smart older sprinters for the JHB Colt Partnership.
His final run last preparation has worked out well, where he was an arguably unlucky third in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes behind subsequent Everest winner Giga Kick and the very smart Buenos Noches. He went in the Maurice McCarten off just one trial for new trainers Peter and Paul Snowden, but always looked in control under Brett Prebble, who contained him beautifully during the early and middle stages before unleashing an electric 33.05s final 600m, which gave his rivals no chance of catching him.
Cannonball is building up an impressive record as a top-class sprinter and will now seek to capitalise on this impressive return in the quality upcoming sprints. He is one of eleven stakes winners for his exciting young sire Capitalist, and is a full-brother to another of those, in the shape of Group 2 winner Marine One.
Congratulations to owners Belinda Bateman, Fergus Doyle, Rob Love, Phil & Glenda Mehrten, John & Frances Ingham, Gary Diamond and Danny & Pauline Saab. Big thanks to trainers Peter and Paul Snowden, who have done a great job with this colt and also to jockey Brett Prebble, who rode him perfectly.
